Lough Currane & Upper Lakes
April 16th to 20th 2009

Lough Currane is cradled within the mountains of County Kerry, S.W. Ireland. It totals 2,500 acres and is 3 ½ miles long and 2 miles at it’s widest.
The lough is one of the best sea trout fisheries in the country and big spring salmon and vast numbers of sea trout have to run only a short 500 yard length of river to reach the lough. The best chance of getting a Spring Salmon or a large sea trout is from the beginning of March to beginning of May, so the dates I have chosen are specifically for the early big fish runs. On this weekend last year the biggest sea trout caught was just over 11lb.
For this trip I have arranged for local angler and Irish Champion, John Buckley to team up with us for the full 3 days to guide us.
As well as Lough Currane we also have the added bonus of getting permission to fish the upper lakes in the system run by John Murphy of the Waterville Fisheries Developement Group.
The Upper Lakes are set in the most breathtaking surroundings and consist of Derriana, Namona and Cloonaghlin. As well as the sea trout & salmon runs, brown trout fishing is at it's best at this time with the prolific hatches of duck fly.
This trip promises to be a cracker and places are limited to 5 anglers.

For this trip I have arranged for local angler and Irish Champion, John Buckley to team up with us for the full 3 days. He will be guiding us and sharing his expertise and knowledge of these great waters.

Tackle Required

10' #7/8 rod is all you need. However, lough-style fishing is generally short-lining so you would benefit from a lighter line. I use a 10' #6.
Floating line is all you'll need, although Ghost tip or intermediate will give you more control in a big wind.
Leader material 5-10lb, standard mono for pulling wets and florocarbon for fishing nymphs and dries.
Boyancy aid.

Accommodation

Currane Lodge is a lakeside family run bed and breakfast with panoramic views in quiet location over-looking Lough Currane. The food is superb as proprietor Ann McCarthy is a qualified chef with over 20 years experience in the hospitality industry. Available is a large breakfast menu and a variety of home baking. The property is situated on the shore of Lough and the boats are a short walk away.
